I used models in period costume to convey a sense of time past,  of family togetherness, the boys looking for clams, shells and other squirming," beachy" things.  This painting was done on the west coast and I enjoyed the cool atmosphere and close values that seemed to be present  that day.

The wind must have been blowing, for its a good reason to come indoors. This is inside a winery. Painted very fast. The composition, gesture of the people and color field are the first considerations of this little study. Everything that the artist attempts doesn't always work out. Some times I toss out the painting considering it not a loss, but an exercise in painting moving "targets". However some like this one, have a liveliness and spontaneity about it that I enjoy.

The autumn trees with low, fast moving light was a temptation to try and capture on canvas.  While my painting buddy and I were chasing the light, a local newspaperwoman came up to us and asked if she could photograph us,  and asked us our names, etc. We and our paintings in color no less, appeared in the newspaper which was a pleasant surprise and a boost to us.  These monster trees stand in a cluster in Columbia Park with the amazing Columbia behind.  A delight to behold!

The attraction to this statue in the square was the light and shadow that fell across the figure as I was looking for something to demonstrate for my oil painting class in Gig Harbor.  It was such a large, bold, organic shape in contrast to the pots and tools in the nursery, I couldn't resist her.  Besides, I knew she would "hold the pose" for the duration.  This is a small study approximately 8x10.
